Following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the entrance of the United States into World War II, a small group of civilian dog enthusiasts approached the Army about creating a program that would utilize the special traits and skills of “man’s best friend” in order to further the war effort.
The first of the Army’s canine members were trained for sentry duty. Later they served a variety of roles. Many citizens lined up to enroll their own pet dogs as War Dogs. My Great Aunt donated her dog Von and after serving 4 years as a sentry he was sent to rehabilitation camp and returned home. Many of the dogs that survived were unable to be rehabilitated and were sadly put down, Luckily Von was able to return to Civilian life. Below you will find his discharge paperwork along with a short bit on training and their diet.
